What Evan Mathis Knee Injury: Means for the Philadelphia Eagles? posted by Eagles Fan

Philadelphia Eagles All-Pro guard Evan Mathis appears to be recovering quite well from a medial collateral ligament injury in his right knee that he suffered all the way back in Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

This is great news to Eagles fans and unless there’s an unforeseen setback to his timetable, Evan Mathis is scheduled to return to action Nov. 10.

According to Tim McManus of PhillyMag.com, Mathis was back at practice with the team for the first time since the MCL injury back at the beginning of the season, but since the Eagles organization placed Mathis on the injured reserve list, he is ineligible to return to action whether he is fully healed or not, until the November 10th date.

November 10th cannot come soon enough for the Eagles, as Mathis’ return will be a huge boost to the depleted Eagles offensive line that also lost star center Jason Kelce earlier this year. The team needs that veteran presence back on the line in order for them to be productive on the ground once again. An O-line needs time and games together to build a bond that is so key when adjusting to multiple blitz looks and defensive fronts in the heat of the game. Also to not leave too much into the hands of their quarterback, who has shown, time and time again, that when he puts too much of the offensive production onto his shoulders, it is usually met with disastrous results.

When Mathis, and soon after, Kelce are healed and cleared for play, the Eagles can have their original O-line back, the same O-line that produced the NFL’s best run game a season ago, but has since been less than stellar, half way through the season.

Is Bortles Jacksonville’s franchise quarterback for the future? posted by Jaguars Fan

It’s no secret that the Jacksonville Jaguars haven’t had the best luck in terms of franchise success. Point to a small market, less than enthusiastic fans, and sub standard on field performance as reason why, but there may be hope in the distant future for the Jags and the city of Jacksonville. And that hope may lie with Blake Bortles.

While the stat sheet may not be kind to Bortles, let’s take a deeper look and see what’s really going on here. Bortles is a rookie QB. Any rookie QB is going to have growing pains, as the game is just that much more complex and faster compared to college.  And Bortles got thrown into the league needing some development (and all QBs need development to some degree) and was put on a very bad and young team, but there is no doubt that Bortles has the mental capacity to ingest the dense Jacksonville playbook and the skill set to become a high end QB in this league.

But with a young team, you get to go through the bad and the good together and really grow and have that team bond that makes players play harder for each other, and that is something the coaches see as well as the fans.

Simply put, people believe  in Bortles as there QB for the future.

Thanks in large part to the ownership of Shad Khan and the direction of general manger David Caldwell, the fanbase is revitalized, enthusiastic and excited about the future, possibly for the first time in a long time.

This is a young team, and will only grow and get better with experience.  The best thing the Jaguars and fans can do for Bortles is let him grow. I truly believe he’s going to be a good one.

London, turning into a logistical nightmare for the Cowboys posted by Cowboys News

With the Cowboys set to face off against the Jags Sunday night in London, the only thing on Dallas’ mind should be winning, as they are coming off a two game losing streak, key injuries to Tony Romo and others. But this ‘gimmick’ game taking place across the Atlantic is proving to be more of a distraction than the Cowboys wished for.

Their normal routine is thrown off with time zone change, a 9 hour flight, and other logistical headaches of shuttling not only the team but the entire Dallas support staff through a small, condensed city like London.

Case and point it took over 3 hours to get the team from the airport to their hotel, once they arrived in London. And to make matters worse, they were kicked out of their hotel and forced to change lodging locations as the Jags, being the home team and decider of where lodging accommodations are, chose a hotel closer to the stadium.

All players know they are paid employees. They are at the whim of the league and their agenda to spread the brand of the NFL globally, but at what cost? Dallas needs to win on Sunday in order to stay pace with the Eagles and in order to win, they need Romo back and healthy.

And a 9 + hour plane ride does nothing but impede the healing process for the QB who suffered two fractured transverse processes in his back. He back remains sore, stiff and painful, but he, like all NFL players, know they have a job to do and will do what he can to get back on the field for Sunday’s contest.

Some of the players are taking this logistical nightmare well and try to get some sightseeing in and take in the pleasure of being able to travel to such a historic city, but they know that winning is first and foremost for them and for the team.

Can The Jacksonville Jaguars Improve On Last Years Performance? posted by Jaguars Fan

The Jacksonville Jaguars drafted Blake Bortles with the number three selection in the 2014 NFL Draft with the hope that he’ll become the franchise quarterback. The selection was a bit controversial as the team passed on two more talented players—Sammy Watkins and Khalil Mack.

The team insists that Bortles won’t start yet but the rookie could eventually get the job. The other probable starter, Chad Henne, just does not have the skills to lead a team with minimal talent.

The team will have to make do without Justin Blackmon, a talented wide receiver who has been suspended indefinitely for substance abuse. Thus the team will have Allen Robinson, Margise Lee (both rookies), Ace Sanders and Cecil Shorts as the top receivers.

The other weapons that Bortles will have to work with are Marcedes Lewis and running back Toby Gerhart who came via free agency. Lewis has been a perennial underachiever during his career.  Former No.2 pick Luke Joeckel struggled during his rookie year and he could be assigned to the blind-side position with the departure of Eugene Monroe. The team hopes that Joeckel can prove that he is not a bust.

The team was not even better on defense last year, which explains why it was one of the inferior squads with a 4-12 record. The team gave up 20-plus points in 14 of their 16 outings. Only the pitiful Texans and Raiders were able to score below 20 against them.

The Jaguars hope two free agent acquisitions, Red Bryan and Chris Clemons, would help the defense.  Bryant gives them no-pass rushing ability but he is a better player than Tyson Alualu. Clemons, on the other hand, had 11 sacks two years ago and could improve the worst pass rush in the league.

2013 NFL Draft: Rounds Two - Seven Recap posted by Joe Anello

It was an eventful and unpredictable NFL Draft, even after the craziness that ensued in round one Thursday night. Friday night showcased rounds two and three, while Sunday wrapped up the draft with rounds four through seven. Let’s run through the major storylines that came out of the 2013 NFL Draft!

*Pardon for the delay. This is what happens when life throws the draft, C2E2, and the impetus to change jobs all in one weekend.

-After slipping through the first round despite several reported landing spots, Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o became a San Diego Charger. The Chargers traded picks 45 and 110 to the Cardinals for pick number 38, allowing them to move up for Te’o. At that point in the draft, the drama-laden linebacker had great value. The Chargers run a 3-4 scheme, but he can still be a valuable inside presence for them.

-On the very next pick after Te’o was selected, the New York Jets saw a “franchise” quarterback fall right into their laps at number 39 overall with Geno Smith. Smith increases the QB count on the Jets roster all the way up to six, which includes Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow, Greg McElroy, and David Garrard. Yeah… someone’s gonna get cut. The obvious cut is Tebow. But then who? Do you cut the veteran Garrard, whom you just brought in? Or do you take the massive cap hit and release Sanchez? Or are you giving up on the idea that McElroy can be anything? The drama is ratcheted up in New York, and I’m gonna love every minute of it.

Free Agency 2013: Two Weeks Later posted by Joe Anello

Okay everyone, it’s been long enough since my last check-in that a slew of impactful transactions have taken place in NFL free agency. So without further adieu, let’s go around the league!

(Here are my takes on the moves from day one and days two and three of free agency.)

WR Greg Jennings signs a 5-year $47.5 million deal ($18M gtd.) with the Minnesota Vikings

This move was almost a necessity for the Vikings AND Jennings. Minnesota was in dire straits at the receiver position after they traded away Percy Harvin to the Seahawks. Jennings wasn’t getting any more money than the Packers offered him, so he oddly walked away from that deal and signed with the division rival. He’ll be THE focal point in Minnesota at the receiver position. Maybe this eases Adrian Peterson’s rage over the trading of Harvin. Maybe.

LT Jake Long signs a 4-year, $36 million deal ($16M gtd.) with the St. Louis Rams

Shabam. And the real domino in the tackle game falls. Long’s extended physical delayed this deal from getting done sooner, but he’s now a Ram. If he’s legitimately healthy and returns to form, the Rams aren’t going to miss that money in the slightest. So what does this mean for incumbent LT and former second-round pick Roger Saffold? Uh… it means he’s on his way to the right side. Or to a trade. Once Long was signed, it set a real benchmark for other tackles on the market, as we’ll see later.

The Final Drive: Week 17, 2012 posted by Joe Anello

Oh man. The drama from week 17 in the NFL was palpable! I don’t have time to lather you up with a witty intro, so let’s get right into The Final Drive!

(10-6) Cincinnati Bengals 23

(10-6) Baltimore Ravens 17

Well the Ravens probably didn’t want to win this game. Consequently, they looked a tad disinterested. Not a lot to talk about here though. Moving on!

(6-10) Tennessee Titans 38

(2-14) Jacksonville Jaguars 20

This game had no playoff implications whatsoever, but I wanted to touch on the fact that the Titans scored FOUR touchdowns in a span of five minutes without touching the ball on offense. Darius Reynaud ran back two punts for scores while Zach Brown pick-sixed Chad Henne twice. That’s impressive as hell. But it might not be enough to save Mike Munchak’s job.

(11-5) Indianapolis Colts 28

(12-4) Houston Texans 16

Anyone else really interested in seeing how Houston performs in the playoffs? They went from almost the de facto number one seed with a bye all the way down to the three spot with what should be a tough game against the Bengals coming in round one. For the Colts, they might be emotionally peaking at the right time. It’s time for Luck to show his stuff in the postseason.

(9-7) New York Giants 42

(4-12) Philadelphia Eagles 7

It was a mighty effort against a crappy opponent, but the Giants’ losing their prior two games was too much to overcome. They’re 9-7 once again, but this season they have nothing to show for it. Maybe next year Eli. And I’ll likely be acknowledging Andy Reid’s final season/career in Philly tomorrow, when I’m writing about his dismissal. EEP!

The Final Drive: Week 11, 2012 posted by Joe Anello

We had plenty of excitement in week eleven of this NFL schedule, including three overtime games from early Sunday and close calls late. Can’t wait for The Final Drive? Well lucky for you, it starts right now!

(9-1) Atlanta Falcons 23

(4-6) Arizona Cardinals 19

Alright, we can’t ignore it anymore. Atlanta barely gets past crappy teams. Matt Ryan threw FIVE interceptions on Sunday and the Cardinals still couldn’t pull away. The Falcons can’t run the ball and they can’t stop the run. That’s going to be really important come playoff time. Yes, they’re 9-1. Yes, they’re a good team. But they’re not a great team.

(5-5) Dallas Cowboys 23

(2-8) Cleveland Browns 20

Blech. I don’t wanna talk about this one. Thanks for sorta showing up Dallas. (Took you overtime.)

(4-6) New York Jets 27

(3-6-1) St. Louis Rams 13

Huh. That was an ass-kicking I didn’t quite see coming. But if you saw this game or checked out the stats, Mark Sanchez didn’t blow anyone’s doors off. He was 15 of 20 for 178 yards and a TD. You know how that line reads to me? It tells me that’s his ceiling. He completed a decent percentage of his passes (mostly check-downs), but didn’t throw it all that much. He NEEDS a running game behind him/his defense needs to get multiple turnovers. He’s not impressive. And this team still isn’t making the playoffs.

The Final Drive: Week 10, 2012 posted by Joe Anello

Week ten had all sorts of crazy happenings take place, including a blow-out of the Super Bowl champs, an unbeaten falling, and a god damn tie. Let’s start The Final Drive!

(6-3) Indianapolis Colts 27

(1-8) Jacksonville Jaguars 10

Jags suck.

(4-5) Cincinnati Bengals 31

(6-4) New York Giants 13

Cincy NEEDED this win. They had to put a stop to that four game losing streak they were on. At least now they can pretend to be in the wild card hunt for another week. The Giants just got manhandled. They couldn’t put pressure on Andy Dalton, who lit up a soft secondary for four TD’s. Now NY gets a bye week so Eli Manning can rest. They should rebound to regain a hold on the division.

(4-6) Tennessee Titans 37

(4-5) Miami Dolphins 3

This is a second straight loss for the Dolphins, following their shortfall versus the Colts. What makes this loss especially tough is that they were completely dominated by a team NO ONE CAN FIGURE OUT. The Titans played stellar defense, taking it away four times and shutting down Reggie Bush. Tennessee won’t be going to the playoffs, but that doesn’t mean they can’t play spoiler.

(6-4) Minnesota Vikings 34

(4-5) Detroit Lions 24

Megatron’s 207 yards receiving couldn’t make up for Adrian Peterson’s continued domination. And if Christian Ponder plays like that the Vikings are really hard to beat. Back to Peterson for a second though. Are we sure he’s not on something? This is a freakish recovery from a hellacious injury that normally puts guys on the sideline for a year in rehab and then it takes nearly another full year to get back to normal. He did it in eight months. I might be calling shenanigans.

The Opening Drive: Week 10, 2012 posted by Joe Anello

Capped by what can only be called “putrid” primetime contests, week 10 of the NFL season isn’t actually all that bad! We have some very interesting divisional match-ups, including a “losing coach gets fired” match in the NFC East and a possible trap for our lone undefeated squad. Let’s hop into The Opening Drive!

(5-3) Indianapolis Colts at

(1-7) Jacksonville Jaguars

Gross NFL Network. Gross. Indianapolis is a winning team, sure. But they’re not good enough to make this game overly enjoyable. Well, unless you like watching bad football. Like this guy. Jacksonville will entertain me all night long.

(6-3) New York Giants at

(3-5) Cincinnati Bengals

The Giants are apparently “slumping” after losing to the Steelers, so of course they’ll probably come out this week and expose the Bengals as pretenders. Hakeem Nicks says he’s going to play, so Eli will likely bust out of the passing rut he’s in. Cincy hasn’t proven that they can beat the good teams, only that they can hang with them. That shouldn’t change on Sunday.

(4-4) Detroit Lions at

(5-4) Minnesota Vikings

Early this year we thought the Vikings were for real and that the Lions were terrible. A handful of bad Christian Ponder performances in Minnesota and special teams adjustments in Detroit have since leveled the playing field. A win Sunday can put one of these teams in the clustered mix for a possible wildcard spot. (Because let’s face it, neither of them are winning the division.) I like the Lions’ one-dimensional offense over the Vikings’ one-dimensional offense.
